Castor et Pollux

Manitoba Underground Opera (2023)

About

by Jean-Philippe Rameau
Stage Director: Adam Da Ros
Music Director & Pianist: Shannon Hiebert

Presented by Manitoba Underground Opera
August 22 – 25, 2023

Castor and Pollux are twins who will not let anything come between them, even the fact that Castor is mortal and Pollux is half-god. When Castor falls in battle, Pollux embarks on a journey to the underworld to rescue his beloved sibling. The already breathtaking St. Boniface Cathedral will be transformed by state-of-the-art projections, fully immersing you in the twins’ journey from death to immortality in the stars. Winnipeg’s incomparable summer evening atmosphere serves as the perfect backdrop to this epic tale of sacrifice, bravery, and familial love.

“Holographic statues of stone-faced gods flanking the stage, perching high above in nooks ostensibly became silent witnesses.  Projected billows of clouds sweeping across the stone as “real” clouds visible through the cathedral’s hollowed out rose window—its original stained glass blown out by devastating fire in July 1968—slipped by, creating an all-immersive, late summer treat for each night’s capacity crowd.” – OperaCanada
